Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)

was named after both the Scottish botanist David Douglas of the Horticultural Society of London and Archibald Menzies, surgeon and botanist for Captain George Vancouver.

Douglas-fir is not considered a true fir, it is a member of the pine family!

The oldest known and protected Douglas-fir can be found on Vancouver Island. It is estimated to be between 1300 to 1400 years old.
Country

The source of reclaimed Douglas-fir is from old houses, buildings and sites that are slated for demolition. The salvaged pieces are at least 50 years old and often come with a history.

Nails are removed, the old beams and planks are resawn to a thickness of 1", then they are kiln dried to 6%, tongue and groove are milled, and the surface is sanded.

Since much of this wood typically comes from the old growth forests of the Pacific Northwest region, it is clean, tight-grained and has an attractive appearance.

Old growth wood is denser and more dimensionally stable than second growth wood.
